Presenting The Critter Tutorial Workbook and Individual Tutorials

by Kristina Floyd

.•:*¨*:•.   some Critters made up into necklaces  .•:*¨*:•.

This wonderful and thorough Workbook shows you how to create 15 Critters and 1 Sweet Heart in simple steps that are easy to follow - AND you are free to make them to sell or to give, as you like!

The Tutorials teach you to make the Critters on flat bodies, on a sideways mandrel.  This really helps people who are new to making Critters because there's no mandrel in the way as you are trying to create your facial features.  Making your Critters with a flattened body ALSO makes it possible for people on a Hothead Torch to make larger Critter Beads (that must cool in Vermiculite or Fiber Blankets).  Flat bodies are far less likely to crack as they cool AND you can run a cord or chain right through your Critter or Heart bead when they are done!

Once you learn to make the features you can switch to an upright mandrel position if you want to.  And you can easily use these same facial features and limbs on round 3-dimensional bodies - like the pups below.  The center pup with a flat body is in the Workbook.  The fat little pups on each side were made on round beads with the mandrel in the upright position.

Can you see how simple it is to create in the round once you know how to make the features?

The main challenge to Critter-making is to create faces and limbs that delight.  Once you see how to make their faces and limbs the sky is the limit on what you can create.

For example, the set of 'Astronaut Critters' below was created for the 'Beads in Space' competition to go into Outer Space on the next NASA flight.  They were made in the round by using the features taught in the complete Critter Tutorial Workbook.

...and this set of Purple Heart pendant beads was created by using the faces and arms from the Workbook along with the Sweet-Heart bead Tutorial...

there's just no end to the ways you can use these Critters and their Tutorials!

You can purchase a COMPLETE Critter Tutorial Workbook below or

.•:*¨*:•. This is a VERY detailed Tutorial Workbook .•:*¨*:•.

You could create these Critters from the pictures alone if you wanted to.  The Workbook is a full sized, 8-1/2" x 11" in size and is 85 pages long.  It is Spiral Bound to allow it to lay flat, for a reference at your torch.  There are clear plastic covers on the front and back for added protection.

...Here are 3 samples from the Workbook...

They will show you the level of detail and abundance of pictures in each Tutorial...

You can use ANY torch with these tutorials...

In the Workbook pictures the Critters were made on a Hothead Torch using COE 104 rods to show that ANY torch can be used to make them.  The Tutorials are for Beginner to Advanced Lampworkers, and you can improve your Critter-making skills by working through the tutorials in sequence.  A basic knowledge of Lampworking is assumed.

If you are new to making Critters, consider making ONE Critter over and over until you are comfortable with making it.  In this way, your skills will advance as you achieve mastery over each Critter.

For you Hothead Torch users who batch anneal, please note that making Critters with a flattened body will allow you to make larger Critter Beads because flat bodies are far less likely to crack as they cool.

.•:*¨*:•.  BLUE the Dog TUTORIAL  .•:*¨*:•.

Blue would love to sit beside you forever… such a faithful pup!  Make him out of blue glass or whatever color strikes your fancy.  You can also melt on transparent dots for a neat spotted effect.  His ears can be made to flop forward as I have, or can be pullled up to a point or made long and drooped over the sides of his face like a hound.

.•:*¨*:•.  KATIE the Kitty TUTORIAL  .•:*¨*:•.

KATIE the Kitty TUTORIAL

$ 8.00 USD

This sweet Kitty is a good one to start with after Willie the Worm if you are new to lampworking.  She will give you practice slumping and flattening, and putting a little dot face on and drawing a tail with a stringer.

You can make her in endless colors and patterns.  Her tutorial also has variation pictures that include paws and a yarn ball made of a twisted multi-color stringer.

.•:*¨*:•. HENRIETTA & HARVEY Hippo TUTORIAL  .•:*¨*:•.

HENRIETTA Hippo TUTORIAL

$ 8.00 USD

This tutorial makes Henrietta Hippo... as a tutorial she's good practice on eyes, ears and legs.  The face shape is simple and the challenge is to get a lot of emotional appeal with the eyes and ear shapes.

Notice that Henrietta's face is rounder and turns out almost quizzically, while Harvey's is narrower on top and widening at the bottom and is straight with his body.  His look is more interested or curious.  They have different looks but both are appealing.  The little tail standing up on the rear end is a finshing touch that helps make them seem more real.  Make them in any color you like, they are sweet alone or together.

You can also add a flower or bow to make Henrietta even cuter.

.•:*¨*:•. FRANCINE the Fish TUTORIAL  .•:*¨*:•.

FRANCINE the Fish TUTORIAL

$ 8.00 USD

This tutorial makes pretty Francine the Fish, and she can be adapted in endless ways and colors.  Melt in dots and swirl them on the base bead before you flatten it, or place dots upon dots to make scales… the options are endless.

You can also decorate her sides with flower dots or add a side fin.  Imagine all the color combinations that are possible!

.•:*¨*:•. NED & ELLIE Turtle TUTORIAL  .•:*¨*:•.

NED the Turtle TUTORIAL

$ 8.00 USD

 This tutorial will show you how to make this fellow.  You just change the colors to make him a her.

There's plenty of room for adding flowers and dots and cute decorations to their shells!  You can also marbelize the base bead/shell with frit or color swirls for a neat look and then impress your shell lines.

.•:*¨*:•. TEDDY the Bear TUTORIAL  .•:*¨*:•.

TEDDY the Bear TUTORIAL

$ 8.00 USD

Teddy can be made in endless colors and with or without a necktie and poked flower.

The color I used for this tutorial makes him look like Gingerbread to me, but he is a Teddy Bear none the less!  He looks like he is saying “What!  I look like gingerbread?  No bites please!”   You can make his pupil dots smaller and he will have less of a surprised look.

I used green filigrianna for his necktie.  I heated a rod of it and pulled into a thin stringer.  It makes a great vine too because the clear encasing around the green keeps it crisp looking.  Did you notice the stitching-dots down his tummy? You can add them or not as you like.

.•:*¨*:•. TWEETIE the Bird TUTORIAL  .•:*¨*:•.

TWEETIE the Bird TUTORIAL

$ 8.00 USD

This sweet birdie can be a duck or a tweetie bird as you like.  In fact, you can change colors on the body and wings, make it wider or narrower, and make it any type of birdie you like!

You can also put her beak on the other side of her head to have her looking backward.  The sky is the limit to your creative options with this sweet Tweetie Bird!
